Description
Victorian carved Whitby Jet cameo brooch dating from 1880-1890. Following her husband Albert’s death, Queen Victoria required her subjects to display their sympathy by wearing mourning jewellery. An enormous amount of pieces were carved from Whitby Jet because of its black colour.
This piece was carved in two sections. The frame has pierced work around it and a nickel silver pin attached to the back. The cameo face is of a lady with long hair adorned with flowers. It is in a very good condition with no chips or cracks.
The brooch measures 38mm long x 33mm wide. Nice collector’s item.
